Flash floods can make so many bad effects such as plant destruction, destruction of property, dengue, disease, government losses, death, and environmental issues. Nowadays there are a lot of flood cases happening more frequently all over the world including Malaysia. Based on the news we know that flash floods are a common occurrence that have been happening over the past few years. What is the cause of the floods? Based on our surveys and research, we have found that floods happen because of drain being clogged, vest forest exploration and continues raining for several hours. There are few facts on why does drain clogs, that is littering waste products that have been disposed of improperly, without consent, at an inappropriate location. The tree that is near to the monsoon drain will accumulate dry leaves and branches that may clog the monsoon drain.

The effects of floods are devastating. Houses can be destroyed, tar can be pulled off of the road causing major damage, tons of trees can be ripped out, the effects after a flood are simply not a pretty sight. Loose soil can create mud slides, which will create hazardous situations for living things nearby. The economy after the flood can be one of the greatest crisis. Billions of dollars have to be donated by a country's government to rebuild and payback what was lost. Many times these things include roads, buildings, cars, etc. 1,399 humans, 302 animals’ life and INR ₹68 billion (US$950 million) worth of public property, was claimed due to overflow of the Koshi river in 1987. It was the worst flood in Bihar state of India till then. Another thing that people will lose after the event of floods is their jobs, after water damaging the buildings and such, businesses can run down, bankrupt. This causes lots of people to be jobless, which in effect, creates no way of paying for daily needs. Usually to revive an area, a lot of effort is needed such as pumping out water out of the civilized location. Besides that, we also found out that the current system in Malaysia is rather ineffective, the worker will only clean up the drain after "heavy rain."

Based on our research and experiments we got to know that there were a few characteristics when a drain gets clogged that is the water level increases and water flow decreases. Therefore, we came out with a solution called The Flood Mitigation System. There are 4 parts to our solution - the cadets, which are the deployable sensor units, and the captain our data centre, mobile app and web app, as well as data analytics solution. Our cadet has a few sensors on it and it will sense whether or not the drain is clogged. The cadets are powered by solar energy and will be deployed in selected storm drains by installing on trap grill, and the many cadets will form a mesh network to allow for data communication to the main server unit, the Captain. Our captain, which is our server and data centre, collects the data from the cadets and stores it for use of mobile app and web app . We believe in open data, thus this data will be made available to the public.

These data, together with the data from Jabatan Perairan dan Sungai’s river level data nad Jabatan Meteorologi’s data, will allow us to use machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithm to create a risk map and predict where flood will occur.

Our solution is a more superior solution as we target at the source of the problem, clogged drain and trash flowing into the river. At this stage , we can still do something to prevent flood, as long as we are informed of the situation at the drain. By combining data from JPS, the Meteorology department, we can create a more accurate flood risk map with the help of machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Our solution is a solution of the future, as it combines the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and machine learning in creating a one stop solution to combat flood. Our project reduces the property damage and life losses, allows the city council to clean up the drain more efficiently and most importantly allows us to harness the power of machine learning and AI to solve a critical problem in this climate change world.



63% of natural disasters that happened in Malaysia are flood. Of every 100 people who died as a result of natural disaster, a quarter of them died because of flood. Every RM100 that was lost because of natural disaster, RM63 is due to flood. As climate change worsen in our lifetime, we are going to see more and more flood due to erratic weather. We know that our project may solve the world wide issue, therefore we decided to create a design for IoT Innovation Challenge and launch our startup
